Montana Road Trip

January 1, 2025

While the scenery in Big Sky is always captivating, taking a spring, summer, or fall day to explore other nearby treasures of Montana is an adventure well worth the drive. You can also break it into segments and make it a multi-day excursion.

Our journey begins at Big Sky from Lone Mountain Trail. Turn right onto 191 South, where you'll be treated to stunning views of forests, mountains, meadows, and rivers. After 40 miles, take a right onto Highway 287 and dive into the beautiful landscapes of Hebgen Lake, Quake Lake, and the stunning Madison Valley. Don’t miss the hidden gems along the way, like picturesque Cliff and Wade Lakes.

As you pass through Ennis along the Madison River, renowned as one of the premier fly-fishing destinations in the world, take a worthy detour to enjoy the historic and preserved buildings in Virginia City.

Finally, as you loop back east toward Bozeman, follow the Madison River along a scenic route filled with hot springs, fishing spots, and noteworthy landmarks. To finish your day, head south through the Gallatin Canyon on US 191 and back to Big Sky.

Read on for more information about each destination, and don’t worry−we’ve mapped out a variety of food and drink stops along the way to keep you refreshed and energized.
